Okay, i have a beef to pick with this industrial giant. I went to Wal-Mart on Saturday (two days before Halloween) to get some things for my daughter's class Halloween party. I figure, hey, it is still a few days before so they so still have all their things out right? WRONG! I went to the season department in my local Super Wal-Mart and what did they have instead: Christmas items. The whole entire isle was full of those food gift boxes and candy. There was no sign of any sort of Halloween items. Okay, unless I total did not look at my calender right I know I still had at least 50 hours until the end of Halloween. What in the world is the point of taking down the Halloween displays with the holiday had not even passed? I mean, come on. It is not like all the procrasinators (such as myself who can not really spell the word) would go there a week before the holiday and buy everything they need. And what about those people that forgot something? i don't buy things that I need for important functions until the day or two before. (Like I said, I tend to put things off until the last possible moment. Take the essay I am suppose to be working on.) So when Wal-Mart takes down their displays and puts everything away two days before Halloween is over, they tend to lose business doing that. Or they will put everything remotely Halloweenish into a small bin in the far back corner of the store where no body looks. At least when I went to Target the day of Halloween, they still had all their Halloween gear and costumes right where they had been before. It was condensed down to two isles, but that is more because that was all there really was. Wal-Mart should take a lesson from them. If it is still a few days before a Holiday, don't take down everything pretaining to that day. Instead condense it down and put it all in one visible section.
Yes, it is the spookiest time of the year. When little children dress up in costumes and go door to door asking total strangers for candy.
Now, how many children know the true origins of this holiday? Do they really know why they dress in costume and disguise themselves as something they are not? Do they know the reason why we carve up pumkins with faces and stick lights in them? What is the origin of handing out candy?
Okay for those of you that don't know the reasons behind Halloween here it is in a nutshell...
Way back when, our ancestors believe that the dead rose at this time of year (specifically this night). The dead would haunt the living and would try to posses their living relatives or anyone that they could find. So to stop these spirits, people would dress in disguises and mask so that the spirits would not recognize them as their relatives or even human beings. Pumpkins were carved in scary faces to also scare away the spirits. The people would go door to door with their carved pumpkins (candles were placed in them because there was no flashlights back then) scaring away the evil spirits. Candy, breads, and other sweets were placed out to appease spirits so that they would not remain in the house.
Most children are not interested in the true reason for many holidays. All they know is that on Halloween they get candy. If you happen to have a child, let them know the real reason we dress up. We are scaring away evil spirits.
What is this world coming to? We have had a record setting twenty-two named storms this hurricane season. And the season is not even over yet until the end of November. We have had above average numbers in intense storms with the rating of Category 3 or higher. And now there is a nor'easter hitting New England. Super typhoons have hammered the Chinese and Japanese coast. And lets not forget about the record snow fall in Utah just at the beginning of the month. Is it really global warming? Or is it el Nino? La Nina? Or can there be another culprit? Could it just be the earth's way of letting of a little steam? Maybe she is going through a sever case of PMS. And unfortunately we are the ones that must suffer the wrath of mother nature. Now we are going into winter. Will we see snow in Florida? Or tornadoes in Cape Cod?
Original title, I know. Well, what do you expect?
For my first entry I would like to point something out. This blog is going to sound a lot like other blogs. It is here for me to express my opinions and basically to vent how I feel. I may curse. I may say things that offend people. But hey that is what these are for. I express myself. Everything is fair game. Especially little dogs that bark incessantly. Personally I think that there sound be a ban on all dogs that are no taller than your ankle. Honestly people, what is the point?
I would also like to say this: Is the government prepared for the possible strike of Hurricane Wilma on the Florida Keys? Did they learn their lessons from Hurricane Katrina? Probably not. Or they are even more prepared this time for several reasons. 1) The governer of Florida is none other than the president's brother. As such they will get aid much faster than the other states. Probably before Wilma is even through. 2) There are a lot of rich people down in Florida. Can't have them homeless. Where will they go? Their homes in Aspen or overseas? 3) Did I mention the President's brother? Let's see how well they get this one right.
Okay, next topic....
Well, right now there is no next topic. Like I said first blog. Had to get my voice out there somehow.
I would like to state for the record that if you don't like what I have to say then don't read it. It is my personal opinion. And as they say about a certain body part, everybody has one. No two people really have the same.
Thank you and enjoy.
